Deer scoring app FAQ

Is Trophy Scan free?

Yes. The app is free on iPhone and Android. Scanning, field scores, storage and the community are all free too. Certifying is $24.99 per trophy, and there's no subscription.

Is Trophy Scan available on Android?

Yes. Trophy Scan is free on Google Play for Android phones and on the App Store for iPhone.

How does a scan work?

Start a new scan and add front and side photos if you want. Then walk a slow circle around the antlers while the app guides you, out loud if you turn on voice guidance.

Does Trophy Scan work in low light?

It works best in daylight or a well-lit room. Low light can make a scan less reliable, so move the antlers into good light before you start if you can.

Can Trophy Scan score a deer from a photo?

No. Trophy Scan scores the antlers from a 3D scan you make by walking a slow circle around them with your phone, so it measures the antlers themselves instead of guessing from one angle.

What's the difference between a field score and a certified score?

A field score is the free estimate you get after a scan, shown as a range. A certified score costs a one-time fee per trophy. Once you pay, Trophy Scan professionals score your antlers and certify the score. You get a detailed breakdown saved with the trophy and a score sheet to download and share. Certifying doesn't enter your trophy in any record book. Each one has its own rules.

Are Trophy Scan scores official?

No. Trophy Scan isn't part of any record book, and a certified score isn't a record-book entry. Record books need the antlers measured by an official measurer after they dry. A Trophy Scan score tells you whether the antlers are worth taking in. Here's how to submit your trophy for official scoring.

How do Boone and Crockett, Pope and Young and SCI scoring compare?

All three measure the same basic parts of a whitetail rack: the inside spread, both main beams, the typical points and four circumference (mass) measurements on each antler. Pope and Young uses the same scoring system as Boone and Crockett. Both subtract the differences between the two sides, so an uneven rack loses inches, and in the typical category they also subtract abnormal points. Pope and Young only accepts animals taken with a bow, and a crossbow doesn't count. SCI adds up the measurements with no deductions for uneven sides and leaves abnormal points out of a typical score, so the same buck will usually score the same or higher under SCI. SCI's only deduction is 2% for antlers measured in velvet. Trophy Scan isn't affiliated with any of them.

What score does a whitetail need for Boone and Crockett or Pope and Young?

Boone and Crockett: 160 typical and 185 non-typical for its Awards book, and 170 and 195 for its All-Time book. Pope and Young: 125 typical and 145 non-typical, with at least 10 inches of abnormal points. Both count only after the antlers dry at room temperature for at least 60 days and an official measurer scores them. A Trophy Scan field score shows whether your buck is close.

How accurate is it?

It's accurate. Trophy Scan measures the antlers themselves from a 3D scan instead of estimating from a photo.

What can I scan?

Whitetail deer for now. Mule deer and elk are next, with more species after that.

Can I scan a mount or old antlers?

Yes. You can scan antlers fresh in the field, on a mount on your wall, or from years past, and save each set as a 3D model.

Can I send a trophy to someone else?

Yes. Send it to the person's email address, even if they don't have an account yet. Once they accept, the trophy is theirs, along with its scan, score and any certification. The transfer can't be undone. If it was posted, the post comes down along with its comments and likes.

Who can see my trophies?

Finished scans post publicly to the community feed unless you turn off auto-post in Privacy & Sharing settings. Trophies you don't post stay private. You can delete any post or hide your profile from people search. With location on, the app fills in the county and state where you scanned. You can clear that before you submit, or edit the county later. GPS coordinates are never shown publicly.

How old do I have to be?

You must be 13 or older. If you're under 18, you need a parent's or guardian's permission.

How do I delete my account?

In the app, open your account menu and tap Delete Account, or email support@trophyscan.com. Your account is deactivated right away. Within 30 days, your profile, scans, trophies and media are deleted or de-identified.

How do I get help?

Email support@trophyscan.com, or in the app go to Help & Support and tap Report a Problem.
